It’s a flight south to Brisbane next, then on to Byron Bay, a beachside town that makes room for surfing and relaxing yoga retreats. From Airlie Beach, sail to the Whitsunday Islands, an archipelago of more than 70 islands at the heart of the reef, where you’ll dive or snorkel and get up close to the vast array of colourful fish. Rise early the following morning to hit the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest and best-known coral reef. On day four, drive back to Cairns, perhaps with a stop for lunch at the relaxed, tropical town of Port Douglas, where you can browse shops selling works of ethically sourced indigenous art.

Cape Tribulation was named by Captain Cook after his ship hit Endeavour Reef to the north while trying to navigate a way through. Here you can take a cruise in search of saltwater crocodiles or book an interpretive bush walk with an indigenous guide. This is the gateway to the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest in the world. Head north to Cape Tribulation and stop on the way at Mossman Gorge, where you can join a guided Dreamtime walk to listen to stories of the area’s Traditional Owners and learn about their culture and heritage.
